LGBTQ Rights

The LGBTQ community has made a lot of progress in recent years, and the strength it took the trailblazers of our community to be on the front lines of this battle for generations is one that I have a great deal of respect for. As a gay man, I feel a responsibility to carry on the work of the heroes who came before me and continue to fight for the advancement of LGBTQ rights.

Protect the LGBTQ community from workplace discrimination. In more than half of the states in the country there are no non-discrimination laws that protect LGBTQ people in the workplace. Additionally, Donald Trump's Justice Department declared that federal non-discrimination laws do not protect LGBTQ people. We must bolster federal civil rights laws to protect LGBTQ people in all 50 states from workplace discrimination and make sure that no one anywhere can be fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Federal ban on conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is pseudoscience torture used against LGBTQ children just because of who they are and we need to make it illegal.

Mental health for LGBTQ youth. The suicide rate in the LGBTQ community, particularly among children and teens is alarming. LGBTQ youth are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. 40% of transgender adults report having attempted to commit suicide. We need to work on funding LGBTQ community centers with a focus on mental health counseling and services for kids and teens in the LGBTQ community.
